Y-VISP Peer Liaison Job Description

The Yale Visiting International Students Program (Y-VISP) Peer Liaisons (PLs), under supervision of the Associate Director of Y-VISP and Study Abroad, serve as friends and mentors to Y-VISP participants. They facilitate their integration into student life at Yale and foster a Y-VISP community. 

PLs must arrive prior to the start of the fall and spring semesters to support Y-VISP orientation and to attend the PL training before the fall orientation. During the orientations, PLs will assist with student arrivals, help answer questions about life at Yale, assist with logistics, and organize and lead discussions, activities, and excursions. 

During the academic year, PLs will regularly check in with the Y-VISP students, organize and lead events, including an off-campus day trip in the fall semester, and offer friendship and support to the students, helping them adjust to Yale College and integrate into the community. PLs will be given a budget, and must keep track of expenses. PLs are expected to maintain and respect privacy of interactions among staff and students and must be able to attend weekly meetings with the Associate Director. At certain points during the academic year, the role can be extremely time-intensive. Candidates should be prepared to prioritize this position above other non-academic commitments. 

Y-VISP partner institutions include: Tecnologico de Monterrey (Mexico), University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), Waseda University (Japan), Yale-NUS College (Singapore), Ashoka University (India), The Chinese University of Hong Kong at Shenzhen (China), and ShanghaiTech University (China). Due to a housing shortage and the details of Yale's agreements with these partner institutions, it is likely that only students from Yale-NUS will be able to attend in 2023-24.

Job Requirements:

• On campus and available for fall PL training and fall and spring Y-VISP orientation. Dates are TBA, but usually a week and a half before classes start in fall and one week before the spring semester. Students should be able to work full time (or nearly full time) during orientation (during break times, so students are permitted to work full time in these periods).
• An undergraduate student who will be at Yale for both semesters.
• Able to work occasional nights and weekends, and some periods of long hours during the academic year.
• Mature, detail-oriented, a self-starter, responsible, professional, have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to collaborate and work effectively as part of a team. 
• Have a strong interest in working with international students, international programs, and peer advising. Previous international and peer advising experience preferred. 
• Previous event planning experience is preferred.

Hours: Average 5-10 hours per week

Hourly rate: Approx. $15 per hour

Time Frame: Peer Liaisons are expected to work starting between a few days to a couple weeks after they are hired to begin planning for the upcoming terms, and to communicate with Y-VISP students via email. During this early period, not many hours are required.
